December: Holiday on the Homestead
Members and their families volunteered for the annual Holiday on the Homestead celebration.
November: Exploring Old Newspapers
Members explored historical Newspapers and searched for the differences between the historical and the modern paper. An article on Ms. Wyoming's 1920 visit to New York was loved by all.
October: Leaf Creations
Students worked with pressed leaves to create art and a memory card game. They also experimented with the app Leaf Snap to identify local trees.
September: California Trail Routes
Members explored routes taken to the California gold rush by the Argonauts. Groups chose a route and created an promotional poster for their route. The group ultilzed tablet technology to investigate sources to support their information.
August: Ft. Laramie Moonlight Tour
The club journeyed to Ft. Laramie to enjoy the annual Moonlight Tour. Stops at the Guernsey Trail Ruts and Register's Cliff were exciting due to a passing summer squall. Everyone learned about the life of Calamity Jane and women's secret packing spaces in an introduction to the tour. Students were particularly entertained by the military school master's scene.
July: Muddy Mountain Tree Adventure
History Club members and families explored the life of trees on Muddy Mountain. Lessons from Project Learning Tree were adapted for the club. In one lesson, students utilized their sense of smell to determine if the peppermint beetle had attacked the pine trees.
June: Pioneer Days
Members explored Pioneer Days at the Center. They completed fact-finding pamphlets and interacted with argonauts, soldiers, frontier pioneers, and were given nails by the local blacksmith.
May: Oral Interviews
Members interviewed long-standing Casper residents about their favorite memories of sites in Casper. Students practiced recording the interviews for future presentations.
April: A Piece of History
Members shared objects from home which may become a piece in history. They explored photos of the past and discussed possible use for the objects, and then practiced writing museum labels.
March: Transportation Timeline
Going back in time, members researched the evolution of transportation. They created a colorful timeline representing the development of transportation.
February: Winter Play
Snow play! Families gathered on Casper Mountain to play in the snow and make snow candy.
Members explored animal hides and discussed preferable trapping times. Students also invented a game to mimic animal behavior. At the end of the day everyone warmed up with a bowl of homemade chili.
January: Cross-country Skiing
Families met on Casper Mountain for our third annual ski trip. Our Natrona County partners made this trip possible by granting passes to the students. Everyone enjoyed snow time in the meadow.
