Internship Program

BLM Interns with Supervisors

The Pathways Internship Program is for current students (16 years of age or older) enrolled or accepted for enrollment and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in a qualifying accredited educational institution on a full- or half-time basis.

This program replaces the Student Career Experience Program (SCEP) and Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP). The Internship Program provides students enrolled in a variety of academic fields with paid opportunities to work in agencies and explore Federal careers while still in school.

There are two student appointment types in the Internship Program.

[1] The Career or Indefinite Intern is a student trainee and developmental, excepted service appointment expected to last more than 1 year.  The features of this student program appointment are as follows:

  • This program appointment mentors and trains the Intern in preparation for permanent employment with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).
  • Academic curriculum and career goals must be directly related to the agency duties and career path.
  • Must maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of a 2.5 or better and be in good academic standing with the educational institution.
  • Must enter into a written agreement that outlines the student trainee and agency expectations, roles and responsibilities.
  • Assign a mentor outside of their chain of command.
  • Eligible for noncompetitive conversion into a permanent or term position upon completing agency and degree program requirements.

[2] The Intern Not-To-Exceed (NTE) is a student temporary, excepted service appointment expected to last 1 year or less.  The features of this student program appointment are as follows:

  • This program appointment hires a student on a temporary basis to help complete short-term projects, perform short-term labor-intensive tasks, or fill traditional seasonal and summer jobs.
  • Academic curriculum and career goals do not have to be directly related to the agency duties.
  • Must maintain a cumulative GPA of a 2.0 or better and be in good academic standing with the educational institution.
  • Must enter into a written agreement that outlines the student and agency expectations, roles and responsibilities.
  • May assign a mentor outside of their chain of command.
  • Not eligible for noncompetitive conversion into a permanent or term position upon completing degree program requirements.
