Interviews with Former BLM SCEP Students

Topic 1: SCEP

Interview Clip of Katherine Iavicoli, HR Specialist, Former SCEP Student

SCEP is a great stepping stone to a career with the Bureau of Land Management because the student is given that training, and they get that experience they need to be successful in their position once they graduate. And the fact that students can convert, so they can start a full-time position upon graduation, without having to complete like you do for most Federal government positions. So, if you are looking for a way to begin a Federal career, the Student Career Experience program is a great opportunity for that

I had a chance to actually work in the profession that I was going to take on once I finished the SCEP program.

Here’s an opportunity to play around to kind of play around a little bit, see what you like, meet the people, find out what they do, and learn, nationwide, what’s going on and whether or not you could see yourself in there.

I came into an office that really supported me and had wonderful people. There is no better environment for you to be able to get job experience and really learn your job and be a part of something positive like the environment that BLM lays out for you. It is just a great organization that really takes care of its people, and I would say do not let that opportunity pass you by.

Topic 2: Benefits

There are many benefits of the SCEP program that continue when you begin a career with the Bureau of Land Management. For instance, there’s retirement system, life insurance, health insurance, savings program. We have a wellness program. We have on-the-job training. We have continuing education.

What attracted me to it was the benefits. Guaranteed a job. Full medical benefits. And the flexibility that the Washington Office gives to the SCEP employees, to come in during the winter breaks, to come in during the spring breaks, and to come in during the summertime.

They can be treated just like a full-time employee, getting the benefits, the pay, and experience.

It helped me, as a single mom, take care of two kids, with health insurance and reasonable hours, and all that other practical day-to-day stuff.

Topic 3: Opportunity

Interview Clip of Leon Thomas, Training Coordinator, Former SCEP Student

The door is wide open as far as promotion opportunity. As far as promotion opportunities and opportunities to advance, it’s entirely up to me on what direction I would like to go. I have already had a few opportunities to advance already, and I have only been with the Bureau for two and a half years.

Interview Clip of Andrew Goldsmith, Management Analyst, Former SCEP Student

I think if you are interested in joining the BLM, one of the positive aspects of joining the Bureau of Land Management is that you can get a great amount of freedom and responsibility in your job. The agency is fairly open to innovative ideas.

Interview Clip of Tiya Samuels, Business Management Specialist, Former SCEP Student

It offers both sides of it. If you want to work in the field, if you want the hands-on experience, it’s there. And if you want to be in the backdrop doing the administrative side of things for BLM, that opportunity is there too.   So, the experience you can get here is pretty varied.

Interview Clip of Al’Tariq Samuels, Information Technology Specialist, Former SCEP Student

When you show that you want to gain knowledge and experience, all you do is just mention it, and then you’ll go … And I can get network administration. I can get database development administration. I can get budgeting experience, and helpdesk experience in a number of different fashions. It is very beneficial in the IT field because you back up everybody. That experience will carry me forward with any endeavor that I choose in the future.
