National Public Lands Day

“The National Public Lands Day (formerly known as Public Lands Appreciation Day) has been an exceptional success for the Ely District BLM.  The Ely BLM has had the lead in organizing this yearly event for the majority of the last 12 years.  Partners include the Nevada Department of Wildlife, National Park Service, USFS, State Parks, Nevada Division of Forestry, the White Pine County School District, the White Pine Chamber of Commerce and Mount Wheeler Power Company (who yearly supplies and serves a quality lunch for all attendees). Each year, hundreds of locals join together to participate in hands-on environmental projects which have included building cross country ski trails, planting trees, trash clean up, archeological surveys, and restoration of disturbed areas.  All of the youngsters are treated to environmental education stations. For months afterward, these children (and adults) can be seen wearing their National Public Lands Day shirts and hats around town.  It has provided for great interaction between agency folks and the local communities that we serve.”
