Jupiter Inlet Working Group

GROUP PICTURE OF SEVEN MEMBERS OF THE JUPITER WORKING GROUP

“There is a partnership between the Jackson Field Office and other federal, local and private entities in Jupiter, Florida, which, to me, represents an example of the best of BLM.   By sharing expertise and funding, this group is restoring imperiled habitats, improving public facilities and safeguarding our cultural heritage on an "island" of open space that is very much a part of this south Florida community.   PICTURE OF LIGHTHOUSE AT JUPITER INLET

This dynamic partnership, called the Jupiter Inlet Working Group, is made up of representatives from seven federal, local and non-profit organizations; the Bureau of Land Management, Town of Jupiter, the Village of Tequesta, Palm Beach County, the U.S. Coast Guard, Jupiter High School, and the Loxahatchee River Historical Society.  Over the last decade, the Jupiter Inlet Working Group has accomplished a great deal at the Jupiter Inlet Natural Area such as wetland construction, river slope stabilization following hurricanes Frances and Jeanne, fuel hazard reduction in the wildland urban interface, and habitat improvement for endangered species.  The Jupiter Inlet Natural Area is a strategic location which contains regionally important natural, historic and prehistoric resources, including the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse, a host of special status species and imperiled habitats all in an urbanized setting in northern Palm Beach County. A bill is currently before Congress to designate the area as an Outstanding Natural Area and unit of the National Landscape Conservation System. This area offers a unique opportunity to provide critical and rapidly vanishing publicly owned green space in a highly urbanized part of Florida.”
