BLM hosted an extraordinary variety of work and educational activities at a record 112 NPLD sites in 18 states from Alaska to Florida, enlisting the aid of volunteers of all backgrounds, skill levels, and ages. For instance, New Mexico high school students volunteered for a day of trail maintenance and environmental education on Animas City Mountain near Durango, Colorado. (Please see video link at bottom left.) Elsewhere, volunteers helped to improve wildlife habitat, refurbish historic cabins, stabilize stream channels, paint, revegetate, weed, and otherwise restore thousands of acres of BLM public lands and facilities. In addition to t-shirts, certificates of appreciation, and other recognition items, volunteers were thanked with NPLD “fee-free coupons,” vouchers redeemable for one free day at any fee site managed by BLM, Forest Service, National Park Service, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, or the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers within the next year.
