Getting down and Dirty
for the Public Lands

National Public Lands Day volunteer crew, Siebert Cabin Recreation Area, Ridgecrest, California

In the Kanab, Utah, area, NPLD volunteers used shovels, rakes, pulaskis, and rock bars to construct a mile of new foot/equestrian trail, part of a local loop trail system.

On Saturday, September 29, 2007, a veritable army of volunteers answered BLM’s call and set to work improving our public lands.  For these dedicated folks, the annual celebration of National Public Lands Day (NPLD)—the nation’s premier workday on behalf of our nation’s public lands—offered a perfect opportunity to support America by enhancing its natural and cultural resources.  more

In 2006, BLM and the non-profit Public Lands Foundation (PLF) agreed to join forces to perform data collection in support of BLM decision-making.  Many PLF members are retired BLM managers who are experienced in BLM-approved techniques for monitoring/inventorying wildlife habitat, vegetation communities, weed populations/ distribution, and riparian functionality.  BLM Field Office resource specialists prescribe the methods, timing, and location of monitoring efforts, and provide transportation and training, as necessary, for PLF volunteers.  Not only do PLF volunteers share their expertise with BLM managers, they also provide guidance to other volunteers.  For reports on projects being conducted as part of this program, click here.

BLM’S WILDERNESS STUDY AREA VOLUNTEERS LOVE A CHALLENGE

BLM manages almost 600 BLM Wilderness Study Areas (WSAs) comprising more than 13.7 million acres in 12 western states, including Alaska.  WSAs are managed for their wilderness qualities, but have not yet been given the special designation “Wilderness Area” by Congress.  As in Congressionally designated Wilderness Areas, no roads or motorized/ mechanized vehicles are allowed in WSAs. feature
