Water Canyon Recreation Area

Location
Approximately 4 miles east of Winnemucca, Nevada
 
Description
Secluded Water Canyon offers a rugged, picturesque setting along the canyon’s upper reaches and a lush riparian area of cottonwood and aspen trees along the stream at the canyon bottom. A few primitive roads travel up into the Sonoma Mountains from the recreation area, offering a variety of back country adventures. A 4-mile trail in Water Canyon links mountain bikers to the 40-mile-long Bloody Shins Trail System within the Santa Rosa-Paradise Peak Wilderness.
 
Directions
From Winnemucca Boulevard in Winnemucca, turn south onto Hanson Street, which turns into Water Canyon Road after 2 miles. Continue 2 miles on Water Canyon Road into the recreation area.
 
Visitor Activities
Hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding.
 
Special Features
The recreation area features one of the few riparian (streamside) habitats within this otherwise desert environment.
 
Permits, Fees, Limitations
No permits or fees. Motor vehicles must stay on existing roads.

Camping and Lodging
Primitive camping is available, with a 3-night camping limit. Winnemucca has several motels and RV campgrounds.
 
Food and Supplies
Food and supplies are available in Winnemucca. Most stores are open 7 days a week, including evenings.
 
First Aid
The nearest first aid is available at Humboldt General Hospital in Winnemucca.
 
Additional Information
The best time to visit is April-October. All roads within the recreation area are made of dirt. Visitors must use four-wheel-drive vehicles to travel past the main recreation area. Roads are only passable in dry weather and are snow-covered in winter months. The stream can dry up during exceptionally arid summers.
