Wild Horse and Burro Sale Stastistics for FY10

Wild Horse and Burro Sale Statistics - FY 2010

Wild Horse and Burro Trademarked LogoUnder a December 2004 amendment to the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act, animals that are more than 10 years old and those that have been passed over for adoption at least three times are eligible for sale. When an animal is sold, title of ownership for the animal passes immediately from the Federal government to the buyer. However, buyers are required to sign a statement confirming that they are not obtaining the animal for the purpose of sending it to slaughter.

Proceeds from the sale of eligible animals are used for the BLM's wild horse and burro adoption program, as directed by Congress under the sale-authority amendment. Animals that have been passed over for adoption at least three times are in the BLM's short-term holding facilities and are offered for sale through the specific facility. Wild horses older than 10 are transported to long-term contracted pasture facilities, where they roam freely on thousands of acres. If you are interested in buying a wild horse or burro, please e-mail wildhorse@blm.gov .
