BLM Sets Meeting of National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board for June 30 in Reno - The Bureau of Land Management’s National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board will meet on Monday, June 30, 2008, in Reno, Nevada, to discuss issues relating to the management, protection, and control of wild horses and burros on Western public rangelands.  The one-day meeting will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., local time, at the Silver Legacy Resort Casino. BLM Sets Meeting of National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board for February 25 in Tucson - The Bureau of Land Management’s National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board will meet on Monday, February 25, 2008, in Tucson, Arizona, to discuss issues relating to the management, protection, and control of wild horses and burros on Western public rangelands.  The one-day meeting will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., local time, at the Radisson Suites Tucson, 6555 E. Each pasture facility must be able to provide humane care for and maintain at least 1,000 wild horses - up to as many as 2,500 - over a one-year period, with an option under BLM contract for an additional four one-year extensions. The BLM needs additional space for wild horses placed in long-term holding facilities, all of which are currently located in Kansas and Oklahoma. (6/25/07)

BLM Announces New Appointments to National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board The BLM today announced new appointments to its National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board. The nine-member board advises both the BLM (an agency of the U.S. Interior Department) and Forest Service (an agency of the U.S. Agriculture Department) on the management, protection, and control of wild horses and burros that roam Western public rangelands. “Save the Mustangs” Fund Ready to Distribute $200,000 to Wild Horse Organizations for Long-Term Care of Horses The BLM, Take Pride in America®, and Ford Motor Company announced today that more than $200,000 raised for the “Save the Mustangs” fund is ready for distribution to eligible wild horse and equine rescue groups to help place thousands of mustangs into private, long-term care. Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board Meeting Scheduled for April in Sacramento The BLM’s National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board will meet in April in Sacramento, California, to discuss issues relating to the management and protection of wild horses and burros on Western public rangelands. Bureau of Land Management and Public Lands Council Urge Public Lands Ranchers to Buy Wild Horses The BLM and the rancher-based Public Lands Council (PLC) are urging public lands ranchers to consider buying older wild horses that must be sold under a recently passed law. The appeal, made in separate letters signed by BLM Director Kathleen Clarke and PLC President Mike Byrne, is going out to more than 15,000 livestock operators across the West who hold BLM-issued grazing permits or leases. The PLC represents the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, the American Sheep Industry Association, and the Association of National Grasslands on public land issues affecting ranchers. (2/21/06)

National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board Sets Meeting As BLM Announces New Appointments to Board The BLM’s National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board will meet on August 29 in Denver to discuss the BLM’s management and protection of wild horses and burros. The BLM also announced today the appointment of three individuals to the board, which advises the Bureau on its management of wild horses and burros that roam the nation’s Western public lands. New to the board is Dr. Boyd Spratling of Nevada; members being reappointed are Robin Lohnes of Washington, D.C., and Bill Higham of Montana. (8/8/05)

BLM Announces First Sale of Wild Horses to Tribes under New Law The BLM today announced that it is selling more than 500 wild horses to two Indian Tribes in the Dakotas under a new law passed by Congress. The BLM has sold 141 wild horses (105 mares and 36 studs) to the Rosebud Sioux of South Dakota and 120 horses (96 mares and 24 studs) to the Three Affiliated Tribes of North Dakota. Completion of other sales to these Tribes will take place over the next several weeks. (3/21/05)

BLM Announces Sale of Wild Horses to Horse Group in California BLM Director Kathleen Clarke today announced a sale of 13 wild horses to Lifesavers Wild Horse Rescue, a California-based group dedicated to wild horse protection. The wild horses, all mares, were sold under a new law (Section 142 of Public Law 108-447) that Congress passed in December 2004. The new law directs the BLM to sell wild horses and burros that are more than 10 years old or have been unsuccessfully offered for adoption at least three times. The BLM announced its first sale of wild horses on March 1; that sale involved 200 mares and went to Wild Horses Wyoming, LLC, a southeastern Wyoming company committed to wild horse preservation. Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board Meeting Scheduled The BLM National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board will meet to discuss the management and protection of wild, free-roaming horses and burros on the nation's public lands, according to a notice in the February 16, 2005 Federal Register . The meeting will be held Monday, March 14, 2005 from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm local time. (3/4/05)

BLM Announces First Sale of Wild Horses under New Law The Bureau of Land Management has carried out its first sale of wild horses – 200 mares to a Wyoming-based company – under legislation recently passed by Congress. The new sale authority (Section 142 of Public Law 108-447), which became law in December 2004, directs the BLM to offer for sale those wild horses and burros that are more than 10 years old or have been unsuccessfully offered for adoption at least three times. The agency estimates that about 8,400 animals are affected by the new law. (3/1/05)

BLM Strategy to Manage Horses Upheld in Federal Court United States District Judge Richard J. Leon of the District of Columbia recently dismissed with prejudice a lawsuit challenging the BLM’s strategy to manage wild horses. (9/24/04)

Memorandum of Understanding Will Advance Goal of Increased Wild Horse and Burro Adoptions The BLM and the National Wild Horse and Burro Foundation are working together to increase wild horse and burro adoptions in the United States and provide greater opportunities for public education about the BLM’s unique animal adoption program. Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board Meeting Scheduled The BLM's National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board will meet to discuss the management and protection of wild, free-roaming horses and burros on the nation's public lands, according to a notice in the April 12, 2004 Federal Register. The meeting will be held Monday, May 10, 2004 from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm local time, and on Tuesday, May 11, 2004 from 8:00 am to noon local time. Upcoming Expo and Show in Reno Will Feature BLM-Sponsored Adoption of Wild Horses and Burros A wild horse and burro expo and show, scheduled for July in Reno, Nevada, will feature an adoption sponsored by the BLM that will involve competitive oral bidding for about 30 wild horses. Bidding at the adoption, which will include wild burros from California, will be open to individuals qualified to adopt and will start at $125 for each animal. (05/23/03)

Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board Meeting Postponed  The Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board will reschedule its June 24-25 meeting, the BLM announced today. Correction to Notice of Call for Nominations to BLM Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board  The BLM is today publishing in the Federal Register a Notice of Call for Nominations to the Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board. This notice was previously published in the Federal Register: Vol. 67, No.98, Tuesday May 21, 2002 but with incorrect dates. New Location for Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board Meeting Announced  The BLM's Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board will meet to discuss the management and protection of wild, free-roaming horses and burros on the nation's public lands, according to a notice published in today's Federal Register. The meetings will be held Tuesday, March 19, 2002, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. local time and Wednesday, March 20, 2002 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. local time at the Silver Legacy Hotel and Casino, 407 North Virginia Street, Reno, Nevada. Televised Wild Horse Adoption on September 7; Call 1-800-633-6094 to qualify to bid  The BLM is offering qualified individuals the chance to adopt mares or geldings gathered from rangelands in Nevada and saddle-ready wild horses trained in Wyoming at the Riverton Honor Camp in a competitive bid, televised wild horse adoption. Wild Horses and Burros Looking for Helpers The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is seeking help in finding new homes for thousands of wild horses and burros gathered from drought and fire-stricken public lands.
