Building Fences, Protecting Resources

During the summer of 2008, Youth Conservation Corps members from Colorado spent three days building protective fencing along a popular camping area within the North Sand Hills Instant Study Area.  Group members also participated in an educational presentation on the area’s dune morphology, uniqueness, recreational opportunities and management challenges. As a destination Off-Highway Vehicle area with intensive use, protection of resources is a challenge.  These young people were enthusiastic to work in a dune environment and learn about the area and its resources. They completed 1,200 feet of buck-and-rail fencing and installed interpretive signs educating visitors about the area and the need for responsible recreation. More projects with Youth Corps members are anticipated this summer.
