Current accepted practice of establishing grass and forb species during interim reclamation has resulted in a loss of native sage-grassland habitat that support sage-grouse and ungulates. The voluntary initiation of a pilot project by Shell Exploration and Production Company to restore sage-grassland habitats will ensure long-term habitat conservation goals are met. The Best Management Practice application methods and seed mixtures developed during this pilot project provide real on-the-ground solutions to address controversial issues surrounding the disturbance of native sage-grassland habitats. Shell’s continued monitoring and cost analyses is expected to result in refined solutions or protocols that can be adopted by other operators in BLM Field Offices with similar habitat restoration concerns.
