Coalbed natural gas development has resulted in the innovation of several environmental Best Management Practices (BMP). One issue that remains, however, is the disposal of produced water. To address this important issue, Anadarko Petroleum Corporation has taken the leadership position in the reinjection of produced water from the Powder River Basin. Anadarko has constructed a 50-mile water pipeline that will reinject up to 400,000 barrels of produced water per day into the Madison aquifer in Midwest, Wyoming. The injected water will recharge the Madison aquifer that was previously depleted to support water flood operations at Anadarko’s Salt Creek Light Oil Unit. In addition, for the past 5 years, Anadarko has also taken the initiative to construct an underground power system, burying 25 square miles of power lines in their development areas, significantly more than the average company, to reduce conflicts with other important resource values such as raptors, sage-grouse, and visual resources.
