Total Federal Coal Leases in Effect, Total Acres Under Lease, and Lease Sales by Fiscal Year Since 1990

The BLM has responsibility for coal leasing on approximately 570 million acres where the coal mineral estate is owned by the Federal Government.  Surface ownership of these lands belongs to either the BLM, the United States Forest Service, private land owners, state land owners, or other Federal agencies.

Revenues from coal leasing and production are shared by the Federal Government and the state where the coal is leased.  The Department of the Interior's Office of Natural Resources Revenue (ONRR) maintains statistical data for Federal coal sales volumes, sales values, and revenue.  To visit the ONRR statistics website click here.

This table provides information about the number of total leases in effect, total acres under lease, and the number of lease sales at the end of each fiscal year since 1990.  Acreage totals may vary slightly because rounding is used.  You can also click on each state to view additional data.

Definitions for terms used in this chart

Leases:  Lease means a Federal lease, issued under the coal leasing provisions of the mineral leasing laws, which grants the exclusive right to explore for and extract coal as provided in Title 43 CFR Part 3400.  Figures reflect totals at the end of each fiscal year.

Acres:  Acres means the number of Federal acres authorized in a lease.

Sales:  Sales means the number of competitive bidding processes conducted each year by the Department of the Interior for offering Federal coal reserves.  The number of sales is the number of sales in which coal is actually leased.
