Colorado Preserve America
Youth Stewards

For five summer days, the 2009 Preserve America Youth Summit created opportunities for Colorado students and teachers to interact; exchange information; tour historic places; meet with preservationists, elected officials, scholars, and community leaders; and develop site specific products that will engage youth in heritage education, archaeology, heritage tourism and preservation.

Summit participants were chosen through a competitive statewide application process based on geographic and cultural demographics, involvement in preservation activities, and ability to follow-up in their community.

By visiting some of the nation’s premiere archaeological treasures (Anasazi Heritage Center and Canyons of the Ancients National Monument, Ute Mountain Ute Tribal Park, Mesa Verde National Park, and sites in San Juan National Forest) and participating in educational activities, Youth Summit participants:
  • Learned about the multi-faceted field of archaeology through visits to sites, laboratories, curation facilities, and meetings with archaeologists
  • Learned about the ancestral Native American people who occupied the region
  • Understand the role heritage tourism can play in balancing cultural sensitivity with impacts to cultural resources and contributions to economic vitality
  • Developed recommendations and products to raise preservation awareness for the region

The 2009 Colorado Preserve America Youth Summit was sponsored by Colorado Preservation Inc., Colorado Historical Society, State Historical Fund, Colorado Humanities, National Park Service, United States Forest Service, and the Bureau of Land Management.
