Travel Management Outreach & Partnerships

Outreach

The BLM conducts public outreach related to its travel management program by promoting a responsible OHV-use ethic among motorized recreation users on public lands.  BLM develops public outreach programs to provide information about regulations, penalties, consequences for irresponsible behavior and potential impacts to resources from inappropriate use.   Methods of public outreach include information postings on BLM websites, brochures, fact sheets, news releases and radio programs.

The travel management outreach initiative promotes respect for both public and private land; provides information on access to public lands; encourages users to obtain permission from private landowners if traveling across private lands; and specifies where to get information and maps.  The BLM prepares brochures for public distribution and also provides BLM visitor services in the Field through concentrated patrols, BLM-staffed information trailers placed in the field during periods of intensive public use (such as the hunting season), and public meetings or open houses at key location areas.

The BLM works with OHV manufacturers and dealers (including four wheel drive vehicles, all-terrain vehicles, motorcycles and snowmobiles) to promote the responsible use of OHVs.  These efforts include supplying sales outlets with responsible OHV use ethic materials for public distribution, seeking sponsorship of select OHV project areas and promoting other types of educational partnerships.

The BLM also uses interpretation to expand its outreach to both motorized and non motorized visitor to public lands. These interpretive methods include the development of brochures, installation of wayside exhibits at OHV staging areas and providing specific interpretive training related to appropriate OHV use.

The BLM’s National Partnership with “Tread Lightly! Inc.” is the core public outreach program for OHV information and education. BLM recommends contacting Tread Lightly! Inc. to obtain the latest educational tools available to guide responsible OHV use. This information helps the public prepare for their trip, enhance their safety on the trail, show respect for others through proper trail etiquette, use the best techniques to negotiate special terrain, and leave a good impression on the land. Other related visitor services programs such as “Leave No Trace”, BLM Traveling Trailers, and Operation Respect are also very important to the overall success of BLM’s travel management program. The BLM strives to initiate programs for the public that emphasize the practice of responsible OHV-use ethics, including respect for the land, resources, and private property rights.
