Partnering and Volunteering with BLM Recreation

Now, more than ever, individuals and organizations are volunteering and participating in the day-to-day conservation, stewardship, restoration, and outreach work on our nation’s public lands. This spirit of partnership and collaboration is present in the work of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM)’s Division of Recreation and Visitor Services (BLM Recreation), as nearly two-thirds of the BLM’s partnerships reside in the Recreation Program with over 500 partnerships nationwide. In these partnerships there is a joining of passion and resources to work with the BLM on recreational issues on public lands which have grown more complex, and the recreational needs of the public more varied.

Individual volunteers and partner organizations generously contribute hundreds of thousands of hours of support for numerous BLM recreation-related programs and projects each year. Nearly one half of all BLM volunteer hours are recreation-related. The BLM volunteers are involved in a myriad of activities including the following: building boardwalks over fragile wetlands; rehabilitating and camouflaging 2,000 foot hill-climbs; designing, maintaining and patrolling BLM trails; clearing new hiking and horseback riding trails; building horse corrals for public use; constructing fences at mountain-bike trailheads; eradicating tamarisk in important hiking areas; serving as hosts at campgrounds and other recreation sites; and closing and rehabilitating roads. Annually the BLM provides nearly 10,000 volunteers working on National Public Lands Day projects at over 100 sites throughout the nation, generating more that $1 million in enhancements to BLM public lands and recreational facilities.

Together, the BLM and hundreds of partners and volunteers across the country are working to support the BLM’s unprecedented demand for outdoor recreation opportunities, areas, facilities, and services. To find out how you can volunteer or partner with the BLM, please contact your local BLM Field Office. The following is a list of helpful information and resources related to partnering and volunteering with the BLM.
