Information Bulletin No. 2013-098
To: All Washington Office and Field Office Officials
From: Assistant Director, Renewable Resources and Planning
Subject: Best Burn Practices
This Information Bulletin (IB) supports the Burnwise initiative from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and U.S. Forest Service (USFS) to reduce air quality impacts from residential burning of fuelwood through distribution of educational materials to fuelwood users.
The EPA/USFS are partnering to develop educational materials to encourage homeowners to adopt best burn practices for residential wood burning. Flyers will be shipped to select offices from EPA/USFS with the intent to be distributed with fuelwood permits sold by BLM. An example flyer is attached to this IB.
The EPA/USFS “Four Simple Steps” initiative is an easy way to encourage wood burners to properly dry harvested fuelwood for use in their wood stoves and fireplaces. Unseasoned wood can create excessive smoke and emissions and produce less energy output per unit volume. Burning dry, seasoned fuelwood with a moisture content of 20 percent or less can save money and help reduce harmful air pollution indoors and out.
Please provide this flyer with each issued fuelwood permit to encourage people to properly dry their fuelwood. Flyers will come in pads containing 50 duplicate sheets. Use one sheet per permit. Additional Flyers are available and can be ordered:
Additional information on residential burning can be found at www.epa.gov/burnwise.
Enclosed is also a link to a short video on You Tube that would be beneficial for those selling firewood to watch. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yo1--Zrh11s .
Than you for supporting this interagency cooperation to reduce air quality impacts from residential wood heating.
