Subject:           Secretary's 2012 “Partners in Conservation” Award Winners Announced

I am pleased to inform you of the selection of three Bureau of Land Management (BLM) partnerships to receive the Secretary of Interior’s 2012 “Partners in Conservation” Awards for their outstanding contributions to conservation of the nation’s public lands. These awards recognize partnerships that promote conservation on our public lands, protect natural and cultural resources, use innovative approaches for resource management, and engage youth and diverse entities in accomplishing the Department’s mission.  We thank all of the BLM offices that submitted nominations; as in the past, there were many excellent conservation partnerships, all deserving of recognition.

The partnerships selected this year and the locations of their work are:
  • Iditarod National Historic Trail Centennial Partnership (Alaska)
  • Phoenix District Youth Initiative (Arizona)
  • Ute Learning Garden (Colorado)
A national panel assembled by the Department of the Interior selected the award winners from a large slate of nominees submitted by all Interior bureaus.  The winners were selected for their exceptional contributions to conservation and management of the public lands. Descriptions of the three winning BLM partnerships are attached for your information. Please extend my congratulations and gratitude to each of our winners for their important work.

All winners will receive award certificates from the Secretary. In addition, two representatives from each winning BLM partnership will participate in a special awards ceremony in Washington, D.C., where the Secretary will officially recognize them. Associated travel costs will be paid for by the Washington Office.

Should you have questions about this year’s “Partners in Conservation” Awards, please contact Trevor Needham, National Partnerships Program Lead, Division of Education, Interpretation & Partnerships, at (202) 912-7097 or Trevor_Needham@blm.gov.
