Subject:           The Secretary's 2012 “Partners in Conservation” Awards: Call for Nominations
DD: 06/01/2012

I am pleased to issue this call for nominations for the Secretary’s 2012 “Partners in Conservation” Awards, which will acknowledge achievements in collaborative conservation that took place during FY2011–FY2012 or are ongoing. These honor awards recognize partnerships that promote conservation, protect natural and cultural resources, use innovative approaches to resource management, and engage youth and diverse entities in accomplishing the Department’s mission.

Partnerships between and/or among Departmental agencies as well as partnerships with outside entities, including Federal, State, local, and tribal governments, private for-profit and nonprofit institutions, and other non-governmental organizations and individuals, are eligible.

This year, for the first time, the Department is using an online form for submitting nominations. Nominations must be submitted using the online system to be considered.  Nomination criteria, instructions, and the nomination form can be found at: http://www.zoomerang.com/Survey/WEB22E9ZDC3DUH.  Nominations must be submitted by June 1, 2012. Please note that the online form does not allow the nominator to save progress when completing the nomination. Attached is a worksheet to assist in preparation of online submissions.

A Bureau of Land Management (BLM) panel will review and evaluate BLM nominations against the Departmental criteria. Based on the panel’s findings, recommendations will be submitted to the Director for consideration and selection, and then forwarded to the Assistant Secretary, Land and Minerals Management, for concurrence. Per the Department’s direction, nominations for no more than five BLM finalists will then be forwarded to the Department’s Office of Youth, Partnerships and Service for consideration. Finalists will be contacted for additional information during the Departmental nomination review process.

Please note that for each winning BLM partnership, the Washington Office will fund travel for one BLM staff member and one partner representative to attend an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C., being planned for the fall. Travel funding for additional winner representatives or for accompanying BLM staff will be the responsibility of the nominating State or Field Offices, or partner agencies/organizations.

In 2011, four BLM-coordinated partnerships were honored with Partners awards; more information on last year’s BLM awardees is available at: http://www.blm.gov/wo/st/en/info/newsroom/2011/september/NR_09_21_2011.html.

We encourage nominations and look forward to learning about and helping to showcase your outstanding partnerships! Should you have any questions, please contact Trevor Needham, BLM National Lead for Partnerships, at Trevor_Needham@blm.gov or (202) 912-7097.
