Information Bulletin No. 2012-050

To:                  All Field Officials
                       Attn: Recreation Planners

From:             Division Chief, Recreation and Visitor Services

Subject:         Bureau of Land Management Fee-Free Days for the 2012 Summer Season

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), in conjunction with other agencies within the Department of the Interior, will waive recreation-related fees for visitors to the National System of Public Lands on June 9, 2012 (Get Outdoors Day), September 29, 2012 (National Public Lands Day), and November 10-12, 2012 (Veterans Day Weekend). These fee-free days also apply to areas managed within the BLM’s National Landscape Conservation System (NLCS).

The fee-free requirement only applies to standard amenity fees, though other fees may be waived if the field office manager deems it appropriate.  For data collection and accountability purposes, a zero-value receipt equivalent to a one-day pass may be issued to those visitors whose fee is waived.

We will also distribute “fee-free coupons” to volunteers who participate in the BLM’s
September 29, 2012, National Public Lands Day observance; further guidance will be issued at a later date.

While other Federal land management agencies may observe “fee-free” other than the dates outlined by the BLM, the BLM field units/fee sites in jointly managed areas, near, or adjacent to other Federal units are encouraged to offer similar fee free access as appropriate. In general, these “fee-free” days may waive standard amenity fees and individual day-use fees (such as visitor centers and within National Landscape System units); however, other fees, i.e. those for group day use, overnight camping, and cabin rentals, will remain in effect.

For more information about this summer’s fee-free days, please visit the BLM Fee-Free Days website. If you have questions concerning this Information Bulletin, please contact Anthony Bobo, Jr., BLM Recreation Fee and Permit Program Manager, Division of Recreation and Visitor Services (WO-250), at 202-912-7248 or Anthony_Bobo@blm.gov.
