Subject:           The Secretary’s “Partners in Conservation” Awards: Call for Nominations
DD: 11/20/2009

I am pleased to issue this call for nominations for the Secretary’s 2010 “Partners in Conservation” Awards, which will acknowledge 2009 achievements in collaborative conservation. These honorary awards pay tribute to external and internal partnerships that promote conservation on our treasured landscapes, preserve natural and cultural resources, bring innovative approaches to resource management, and engage diverse entities, including youth, in accomplishing the Department’s mission.

The “external” category recognizes cooperative achievements between Department agencies and outside entities such as: Federal, State, local, and tribal agencies; private for-profit and non-profit institutions; other non-governmental organizations; and individuals. The “internal” category recognizes Department employees, teams, and organizations that have worked to build capacity for partnering with others and to build a culture of collaboration within the Department.

In 2009, four BLM partner organizations and one agency employee were honored with Partners awards; more information on last year’s BLM awardees is available on the BLM Partnerships Program website at http://www.blm.gov/wo/st/en/prog/more/partnerships_home/conservation_award060309.html.

Nomination criteria and procedures for both the external and internal partnership categories are attached. Please note that for each winning BLM nomination, the Washington Office will fund travel for one person to attend the Partners award ceremony, which will take place in Washington, D.C., next spring. Travel funding for additional winner representatives or for accompanying BLM staff will be the responsibility of the nominating State or Field Office.

Please e-mail electronic files AND mail hard copies of your nomination packets to Bibi Booth, Deputy Chief, Division of Education, Interpretation and Partnerships (WO-172), no later than November 20, 2009. (The required Departmental award certification form DI-451 should be completed to the extent possible at the State or Field Office level; however, Bureau/Department signatures will be obtained by the Washington Office once the nomination packet has been received.) Bureau nominations will be compiled and submitted to the Director for approval, and then forwarded to the Assistant Secretary, Lands and Minerals Management, for concurrence. Of the approved BLM nominations, five will be forwarded to the Departmental Office of Conservation, Partnerships and Management Policy for consideration.

We look forward to learning about your outstanding partnerships! Should you have any questions, please feel free to call Bibi Booth at (202) 912-7451.
