Subject: Dennis Willis Receives National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) 2008 Stewardship Award
Program Area(s): Recreation, Travel, Tourism and Visitor Services
Purpose: This directive announces that on October 13, 2007, the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) presented Dennis Willis, Outdoor Recreation Planner in Utah’s Price Field Office, with its 2008 Stewardship Award. The NOLS Stewardship Award, presented annually since 1990, recognizes land managers who have demonstrated exceptional stewardship of the wild lands entrusted to their care. The NOLS chose to honor Dennis for his ability to provide high-quality outdoor experiences for visitors while providing protection and balanced management of the resource in which these experiences occur.
Policy/Action: The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announces that a BLM employee was honored as the recipient of the NOLS 2008 Stewardship Award.
Timeframe: Effective immediately.
Budget Impact: Minimal.
Background: Willis has worked for the BLM for 30 years, of which 27 have been in Price, Utah. The NOLS recognized Willis for his ability to provide high-quality outdoor experiences for visitors while remaining steadfastly committed to protecting and providing balanced management of the Green River as it flows through Carbon and Emery County and cuts through Desolation Canyon, one of the most spectacular canyons in the country. In 2002, Willis also was recognized as Manager of the Year by the River Management Society.
Attachment 1 contains the text of two news releases announcing details of Willis’ contributions and the rationale for his award. One news release was published in the local Price, Utah newspaper. The second news release was prepared by the NOLS and is posted on its website.

Coordination: The BLM has partnered with the NOLS on various projects over the past 15 years. Among other accomplishments, this successful partnership resulted in the development and implementation of the national Leave No Trace Program.
