The Secretary of the Interior created the historic annual award program to recognize contributions of the employees of Federal, State, and Certified Local Governments, and Tribal Preservation in the area of historic preservation. The Secretary’s award is distinguished from other historic preservation award programs in that it focuses on the accomplishments of individual employees rather than on programs or projects and recognizes the contributions of employees at multiple levels of government. The categories for eligibility are employees of Federal Preservation Offices, State Historic Preservation Offices (SHPOs), Tribal Historic Preservation Offices (THPOs), and Certified Local Governments (CLGs). One individual will be awarded from each of the four categories annually. More information is available on the Department of Interior web site at: http://www.doi.gov/initiatives/preservation.html We encourage your offices to submit nominations for your outstanding employees. We also encourage you to nominate outstanding individuals in your SHPO, a THPO, or a CLG and to make those entities aware of this new opportunity for recognition. Please coordinate your nominations through your State Director’s office.
