Subject:          2006 “Making a Difference” National Volunteer Award Winners Announced

We are pleased to announce the selection of eight individuals and groups and one Bureau of Land Management (BLM) employee to receive BLM’s 2006 “Making a Difference” National Volunteer Awards for outstanding volunteer service or volunteer program leadership on the public lands.

The volunteers selected (with the locations of their volunteer work) are: Tom & Marty Taylor (& adopted burro, Hualapai), Phoenix, AZ; Virginia Freeman, Susanville, CA; Canyons of the Ancients National Monument/Anasazi Heritage Center Volunteer Program, Dolores, CO; Darlene Stark, Boise, ID; Big Wood Backcountry Trails, Shoshone, ID; Chuck Worley, Carson City, NV; Scott Wheeler, Price, UT; Jim & Gloria Doughty, Lander, WY. The BLM employee selected this year is Chris Pipkin, Grand Junction, CO.

Summaries of our winners’ exceptional accomplishments in the BLM volunteer program are attached for your information.

A national panel of BLM and partner representatives selected the award winners from more than 35nominations submitted by the BLM State Offices. The winners were selected for their exceptional contributions to conservation and management of the public lands. We thank all of the offices that submitted nominations. As in the past, there were many great candidates deserving of recognition.

The winning volunteers and BLM employee winners will be honored at a special awards ceremony on May 10, 2006, in Washington, D.C. The BLM Washington Office will pay associated travel costs for the winners or, in the case of groups, a winner representative.

Should you have questions about this year’s volunteer awards, please contact Mary Tisdale, Chief of the Education and Volunteers Division, at (202) 452-0365. Thank you for your continued support of BLM’s volunteer program.
