Subject:       Coordination on National Public Lands Day for Antiquities Centennial Proposals                           DD: 02/17/06

 

As part of the steps outlined in Instruction Memorandum No. 2005-245, to commemorate the 2006 centennial of the Antiquities Act, and in furtherance of the call for 2006 National Public Lands Day site proposals requested in Information Bulletin (IB) No. 2006-041, I would ask that you please work with your State/Field Volunteer Coordinators to highlight heritage resources in the design of National Public Lands Day (NPLD) 2006 work projects to be sponsored by your State/Field Office. We are hopeful that each State will coordinate at least one NPLD project with a heritage resources focus, as well as others that feature heritage resources among several program components.

 

The Washington Office Environmental Education & Volunteers Group (EE&V), which coordinates NPLD for the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), has already met with the other participating NPLD agencies and the National Environmental Education & Training Foundation (the overall coordinating organization for NPLD) to develop a coordinated approach to promoting NPLD within the context of the Antiquities Act Centennial commemoration. In addition, EE&V will encourage the BLM State Volunteer Coordinators to specifically approach the BLM Cultural Resource Management Program Staff to discuss the feasibility of coordinating heritage-resources-themed NPLD projects and to offer assistance as needed.

 

Contact information for the BLM State Volunteer Coordinators is attached for your reference. Nominations of the NPLD projects are due to the Washington Office by February 17, 2006; please note that a nomination form and specific submission instructions are included with IB No. 2006-041.
