BLM and Corporate sponsors started National Public Lands Day 6 years ago as a way to draw attention to volunteerism and the importance of maintaining and preserving public lands. BLM - Eastern States held their first event in the east 5 years ago at Northern Virginia's Pohick Bay Regional Park.
For more information on National Public Lands Day, visit the NPLD website at http://www.neetf.org/publiclands/index.htm.
BLM - Eastern States has had an ongoing partnership with the NVRPA for the past 7 years. Since 1991, the Regional Park Authority has opened the Occoquan Regional Park for an annual Kids' Fishing Day; and since 1995, NPLD has been held at Pohick Bay Regional Park.
This is a very rewarding event that would not be possible without the support from NVRPA Chairman Walter Mess, Executive Director David Hobson, Manager of Pohick Bay Regional Park James Short, and Assistant Manager Julie Kutruff -- not to mention the hardworking NVRPA staff and the many volunteers who donated a beautiful Saturday morning to the event.
