BLM Issues New Rules for Riders to Enjoy the Factory Butte Area

In September, 2006, the Bureau of Land Management issued new rules for off-highway vehicle (OHV) use in the Factory Butte Area. The new rules have been put in place to protect endangered cacti that are currently being impacted by recreational use.

As part of the recreation plan, Factory Butte will still be open to a wide range of motorized recreation. A large open play area as well as a system of designated routes will allow OHV users to continue to enjoy many parts of Factory Butte. Campers, hikers and sightseers will also be able to enjoy this area.

These changes will allow recreational users of all types to explore the area, while at the same time, protect both the Winkler and Wright fishhook cacti.
