BLM Announces a Public Comment Period for Kings Canyon to
Alger Pass Pipeline Project Environmental Assessment

Vernal, Utah— The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Vernal Field Office announces a 30-day public comment period for the Environmental Assessment (EA) for XTO’s proposed Kings Canyon to Alger Pass pipeline project. The public comment period will begin on January 10, 2012 and end on February 10, 2012. The EA discloses potential environmental impacts based on the implementation of the proposed project.

The proposed project would be located in Uintah County, Utah, approximately 45 miles southwest of Vernal, Utah.  XTO has requested their existing temporary use permit, which authorizes an existing 8-inch surface pipeline be converted to a permanent right-of-way grant.  In addition, the project includes the removal of a portion of the existing pipeline and to install an additional 12-inch buried natural gas pipeline to re-direct the flow of gas.

Specific details of the project are described in the EA with its associated maps that are available for review at www.blm.gov/ut/st/en/fo/vernal/planning/nepa_.html

Comments, including names, e-mail addresses, and street addresses of respondents will be available for public review at the BLM Vernal Field Office during regular business hours (7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday – Friday), except federal holidays.  Comments and related personally-identifying information will be subject to disclosure under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and comments may be published as part of the EA and other related documents.  Please reference the Kings Canyon Pipeline Project EA when submitting your comments.

Individual respondents may request confidentiality.  If you wish to withhold your name, street address, or email address from public review and disclosure under the FOIA, you must state this prominently at the beginning of your written comment.   Such requests will be honored to the extent allowed by law.  All submissions from organizations or businesses will be made available for public inspection in their entirety.  Anonymous comments will not be accepted.

Written comments will be accepted until close of business on February 10, 2012.

The BLM manages more land - over 245 million acres - than any other Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The Bureau, with a budget of about $1 billion, also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands.
