Confusion Mountain HMA Gather Postponed Until July 2010

Fillmore, Utah—The Confusion Mountain Wild Horse Herd Management Area gather has been postponed from its January 15 - 21, 2010 date until early in July of 2010.

The postponement will allow the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to update the environmental documentation for the gather to reflect 2010 population and vegetation data.  Because horses naturally concentrate in the early summer, the July date will also make it easier to gather the bands.  The postponement also allows more coordination with gather contractors and/or BLM gather crews in planning.

The Confusion Mountain HMA is located in Juab County 80 miles Northwest of Delta, Utah and encompasses approximately  235,000 acres.  A March 2009 population inventory estimated a current population  at 285 wild horses.  The Appropriate Management Level (AML) for the Confusion Mountain HMA has been established at 70-115 wild horses.  AML is determined through land-use planning efforts that involve public participation, vegetation inventories and allocation of forage in terms of animal unit months; the BLM determines the appropriate number of wild horses and burros that each Herd Management Area can support considering other uses taking place on public land.

The BLM manages more land - over 245 million acres - than any other Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The Bureau, with a budget of about $1 billion, also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands.
