Cedar City, Utah—On September 26, 2009 the Bureau of Land Management Cedar City Field Office and Iron County have partnered to offer the public a special volunteer opportunity to contribute to improvements at the Three Peaks Recreation area, a recreation site cooperatively managed by the two entities. This year’s National Public Lands Day-Helping Hands for America’s Public Lands will lend to a variety of volunteer opportunities from clean up at the recreation area and the building of ten new campsites to installing fire rings at the Three Peaks large group campground. The public at large and recreation enthusiasts who frequent Three Peaks Recreation area will benefit significantly for many years to come from these volunteer efforts. All participants will receive a National Public Lands Day T-shirt, snacks and a free pass good for one visit to a National Park of their choice. For more information contact Sherry Roche, BLM Recreation Technician at 435-865-3077. The BLM manages more land - 253 million acres - than any other Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The Bureau, with a budget of about $1 billion, also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands. |
