BLM Announces Vernal Field Manager Selection

Vernal, Utah—Michael Stiewig has been selected as the new BLM Vernal Field Office Manager.  Mike will start work at the field office on August 17.

Mike Stiewig, Vernal Field Office Manage“I’m excited about my move to Vernal and to be able to take on the challenges placed before me. With the field office managing approximately 5.5 million acres, the management strategies will be complex and I am ready to take on those challenges.  I look forward to working side-by-side with the Tribe, local governments and the public land users.” said Mike Stiewig.

Mike, originally from San Antonio, Texas, was educated at Warner Southern College of Florida. Mike retired from the Air Force in 1995, having spent a 20-year career working in geophysical fields related to the United States Atomic Energy Detection System.  He then spent nine years with Honeywell International managing the design, manufacture and installation of seismic arrays at worldwide locations, continuing to support the Air Force's nuclear treaty monitoring mission as a contractor.

Mike is relatively new to the BLM, starting work in the Pinedale Field Office in 2004, where he was the Project Lead for the Jonah Infill Drilling Project EIS.  Following that project, he was the Project Coordinator for the newly-created Jonah Interagency Mitigation and Reclamation Office.  In 2007, Mike was chosen as the Associate Field Manager for Lands and Minerals in the Price Field Office.  In 2008, Mike was selected as the Acting Field Manager in Price.

Mike enjoys being outdoors – fishing and hunting.  In the past, Mike has enjoyed restoring old cars, but is thinking a newer model muscle car might be a fun change.  Mike has been happily married to the former Cheryl Dowell for 37 years and has two daughters and five grandchildren.

The BLM manages more land - over 245 million acres - than any other Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The Bureau, with a budget of about $1 billion, also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands.
