Salt Lake City, Utah—April 11, 2008—The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will be hosting adoptions at the Salt Lake Wild Horse & Burro Center and Delta Wild Horse & Burro Facility on April 19th. Approximately 300 wild horses will be available for the adoption at each facility.  The public is invited to attend and admission is free.

BLM’s Utah Wild Horse & Burro Team Lead Gus Warr said,  “Spring is a wonderful time for the facilities,  not only does is bring nice weather but beautiful babies to showcase and having an adoption on Saturday at our facilities is just another way to provide customer service to potential adopters.  Our facilities are usually open 9am – 3pm Monday through Friday and with spring upon us and new babies at each facility; it just makes sense for us to host an adoption on Saturday and allow the public to visit when it is convenient for them.”

According to Warr, the horses will be on a first come, first served basis at $125.00.  Then qualified adopters may Adopt-a-Buddy for $25.00.  Facility gates will be open from 9am-3pm.

To qualify to adopt, an individual must be at least 18 years old; however, parents or guardians may adopt and allow your younger family members to care for the animal.  Adopters must have adequate facilities to provide humane care for the number of animals requested.  You may not adopt if you have been convicted of inhumane treatment of animals.

All adopters will receive an up to date health record on any adopted horses so they can begin their health regimens with their own veterinarian.  All animals have received a complete set of inoculations for all major equine diseases, including West Nile virus and a current Coggins test-blood draw to assure that they do not have Equine Infectious Anemia.

Animals may be previewed at anytime Monday through Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.  Walk-ups are welcome the day of the adoption.  Additional information on adoption and the adoption application can be found on the web at www.wildhorseandburro.blm.gov .  To receive a faxed or mailed copy of the application, a brochure and other information, call the Salt Lake Wild Horse & Burro Center (877)224-3956 or the Delta Wild Horse & Burro Facility (435)864-4068.  Important!  Stock trailers with side-swinging gates are preferred.  Drop ramps are not acceptable.  Individuals are asked to bring a halter and a lead rope appropriate for the size and kind of animal adopted.
