Yellow Knolls Trail

Recommended Trail Users: Hikers, Horses

Length: 1.93 miles

Difficulty: Easy

Special Area:
 Red Cliffs National Conservation Area

Sub-Area:
 Broken Mesa

Zone: Lowland

Property Ownership:  BLM

Access:  Yellow Knolls Trailhead – From I-15 take Exit 8. Head west on St. George Blvd. Turn right on 1000 East. Turn right on Industrial Road. Turn left on Red Rock Road and continue until it turns into Cottonwood Road. Travel approximately 5 miles on Cottonwood Road to Yellow Knolls Trailhead. The Cottonwood Road starts as pavement and turns to gravel. Road conditions can be rough so high clearance vehicles are recommended.

Description: The first half of the trail is a smooth single track. It hugs the western edge of the East Valley and heads directly into a gap between the sandstone hills known as the Yellow Knolls and high basalt cliffs. The next half mile is a rocky and steep traverse of the lower basalt cliffs. The remainder of the trail is sand, but the close up views of the Yellow Knolls (an imitation of Zion’s Checkboard Mesa) and the numerous Utah Agaves makes the slog worthwhile.
