Length: 1.12 miles

Difficulty: Moderate/Easiest

Sub-Area: Broken Mesa

Zone: Lowland and Upland

Managing Agency:  BLM

Access: Black Gulch Trailhead—From I-15 Exit 8 turn west onto St. George Blvd. Turn right on 1000 East.  Turn right at the traffic light on Red Hills Parkway. Continue until reaching Cottonwood Springs Road and turn left. This road turns into Cottonwood Road at the intersection with Red Rock Road. From this intersection, travel approximately 7.7 miles on Cottonwood Road to the Broken Mesa Trailhead turnoff on the right.  The Cottonwood Road begins as pavement and turns to gravel; road conditions can be rough and rocky so high clearance vehicles are recommended.

Description: High Point is a two-track used intermittently by vehicles to maintain the large powerlines crossing through the NCA. As such, it ends abruptly near the last powerpole below the rocky basalt cliffs of Black Mesa. The trail does, however, come in handy for loops with Yellow Knolls and Black Gulch Trails and also provides great views south into the East Valley past the striking sandstone Yellow Knolls.

Loop 1: If looping, drive time can be saved by parking at the Yellow Knolls Trailhead only 5.6 up Cottonwood Road. For a 3.8 mile loop beginning at Yellow Knolls Trailhead, take Yellow Knolls Trail north. Turn left on High Point and continue until reaching Cottonwood Road. Turn left (south), and follow the sparsely used Cottonwood Road back to the trailhead.

Loop 2: If looping, drive time can be saved by parking at the Yellow Knolls Trailhead only 5.6 up Cottonwood Road. For a 5 mile loop beginning at Yellow Knolls Trailhead, take the Winchester Trail heading west for 0.6 miles until reaching the Black Gulch Trail. Follow the Black Gulch heading north until it crosses Lange’s Dugway Trail. Turn right (east) and follow Lange’s Dugway to Cottonwood Road. Cross the road and enter the Black Gulch Trailhead to use the stepover to get through the NCA fencing. High Point starts at the stepover and heads east for 0.62 miles to Yellow Knolls Trail. Turn right onto Yellow Knolls and head south back to the Yellow Knolls Trailhead.
