Eagle Scout Organizes Bloomington Area Cleanup

On Saturday, August 6, 2011, the area west of Bloomington just off Navajo Drive got a much needed cleanup, thanks to Carter Nelson and his team of volunteers. It was almost a year ago when Carter was out target shooting with friends that he began to notice how much trash and shooting debris was being left behind by inconsiderate visitors.

“When it came time to decide on an Eagle Scout project, I recognized that this would be a great project. It would be pretty simple to organize, but would make a big and immediate difference,” Carter said.

Eighteen volunteers joined Carter Saturday morning, cleaning up shooting debris, household garbage, and abandoned furniture. “We even picked up a car door, Christmas decorations, bowling equipment, and the remains of a jet-ski,” Carter said.

BLM Outdoor Recreation Planner, Dave Kiel, was impressed with Carter’s organization skills, work ethic, and his desire to keep the area clean. “Without a doubt Carter and his volunteers were motivated and energetic,” said Kiel. “It was a hot August day and they decided to spend it getting dirty and cleaning up public lands. The BLM St. George Field Office is lucky to have volunteers like this.”
