Mineral Materials and Community PitsUnder the Mineral Materials Program, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) manages the exploration, development, and disposal of sand, gravel, stone, cinders, and other common rocks. These materials are classified as salables and are available by sale or free use permit if it is not expressly prohibited by law or if it is detrimental to the public interest. The St. George Field Office issues approximately 700 mineral material contracts per year. Mineral materials are sold through competitive/negotiated sales, small (less than $2000.00) over the counter sales and free use permits. Four community pits and one common use area for mineral materials are present on BLM administered lands in Washington County. Three of the community pits managed by BLM provide cinders and one provides a competent flagstone. Over-the-counter sales are made at the fair market rate which is updated periodically. Contact the St. George Field Office for maps, permits, and the latest information. For larger contract sales, contact the St. George Field Office Geologist.
