Volunteers from the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance spent National Public Lands Day working with the BLM St. George Field Office to install wilderness boundary signs at the newly designated Red Butte Wilderness Area.

 

Part of the Omnibus Public Lands Act of 2009, the Red Butte Wilderness Area is just over 1,500 acres of stunning sandstone cliffs wedged into the southern boundary of the Kolob section of Zion National Park. The area can be accessed via a sandy dirt road west of the Kolob Reservoir Road.

 

In addition to the installation of ten boundary signs, the volunteers cleaned up garbage and rehabilitated a number of ATV tracks.

 

BLM Outdoor Recreation Planner, Dave Kiel, took part in the project and was happy with the outcome. “Signing wilderness boundaries is big part of the workload associated with the passage of the Omnibus Lands Bill. It is gratifying to have help from such dedicated volunteers.”
