BLM St George Field Office Connects Youth to the Great Outdoors

On June 1, the St. George Field Office (SGFO) participated in the Get Outdoors (GO) Day Family Expo, with over 500 attendees. This annual event allows the SGFO to share the public land experience with youth and their families, and prompt them to explore on their own. This year, SGFO led participants in hands on “mud pie” (native seed ball) making, which the public could then bring home to dry and put out on the land. This was an effort to teach youth about rangeland restoration, including fire rehabilitation and invasive plant issues.

Other booths varied greatly in scope and activity, ranging from a cave challenge set up by the Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument, a “pick your tool photo op” for future trail workers at the American Conservation Experience table, and Grand Staircase Escalante Partners, who had kids lining up to make their very own trilobite fossil. Seymour Antelope, Mojave Max, and Smokey the Bear were also there showing off their dance moves for the “Public Lands Shake.”

This year’s GO Day was also the launching pad for GO Quest, a Take It Outside activity to highlight five inter-agency family-friendly hikes meant to drive people to discover their public lands. After completing at least 3 of the 5 hikes within the month of June, participants will be able to come back to the Interagency Visitor Center, share their experience with staff, and redeem their GO Quest for a prize donated from partnering organizations and the Southwest Utah National Conservation Lands Friends (SUNCLF) group.

The GO Quest is also tied to the SUNA (Southern Utah-Northern Arizona, pronounced “soon-a”) competition! By submitting a creative photo taken on one of the 5 featured hikes and/or a trip “reflection” such as a poem, essay, story or song that are 250 words or less, you will have a chance to win one of the superb prizes donated to SUNCLF—including a kayak rental for 2, a paddleboard lesson for 2, a scuba-diving lesson for 2, a night stay in Pine Valley’s Forest Haven (Ranger Station), a camelback and many more!

The agencies would like to thank their GO Quest partners: Southwest Utah National Conservation Lands Friends (SUNCLF), Dixie/Arizona Strip Interpretive Association (D/ASIA), Aqua Sports, Dig Paddlesports, the Desert Rat, Author Bo Beck, Away from the Norm, Citizens for Dixie’s Future, Twenty-Five Main, Menchie’s & Tuacahn.

For more information please visit the Interagency Office at 345 E Riverside Drive, St George, UT, or call 435-688-3200.
