Brown Bag Lectures Continue in 2012 

St. George, Utah—Weekly Brown Bag Lectures, sponsored by the Dixie/Arizona Strip Interpretive Association, Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, and U.S. Forest Service provide fascinating educational information on the region’s public lands and natural resources. New residents and outdoor enthusiasts who wish to learn more about public lands can enjoy the noon time forums. Lectures cover a diverse range of subjects including prehistory, geology, biology, and current events and deliver public lands resource interpretation to the community’s doorstep.
 
Each Friday, the noontime lectures are hosted at the Interagency Information Center, located at 345 E. Riverside Drive in St. George, Utah.  Programs begin at noon and last for one hour and attendees are welcome to bring a sack lunch while enjoying the presentations. Admission is free, but space is limited for this popular lecture series. To reserve a seat obtain tickets in advance either at the Interagency Visitor Center or by calling 435-688-3200.

Brown Bag Schedule

April 6: The Bureau of Land Management’s Color Country District Wild Horse and Rangeland Management Specialist Chad Hunter presents; “Wild Horses of the West.Join us as Hunter reviews the history of western mustang herds which date back to the days of the Spanish Explorers. Those whose hearts and imaginations have been captured by America’s wild horses, will delight in meeting just a few of these animals in person during the April 6 program as Hunter will be accompanied by a pair of yearlings that represent this special group. For one day only, two wild horses will be located on-site at the BLM Riverside Road office for the public to view; and for those who are interested and able, to adopt a wild horse and provide one a good home. 

April 13: “Southern Utah Politics in the 1890’s Renowned author, lecturer, and wrestling champion of history, Leo Lyman, presents insightful snaps shots which paint a vivid picture of the region’s most historical events from the latter part of the 19th century. 

April 20: “An Earth Day Celebration” Jenifer Winward, Recycling Coordinator for Washington County has been very instrumental in assisting the county in launching the first county wide recycling program in the history of Southern Utah.  With over 40 “Binnie” locations throughout the county, this successful program is widely supported by local communities which receive commodity money from the recycled goods to support community projects. Join guest speakers Jenifer Winward and René Fleming, City of St. George Conservation Coordinator, as they will bring us up-to-date on what our local governments are doing to intelligently administer local land and water resources.

April 27: “High Desert Chronicles in the Digital Age” Join Phil Tuckett, Dixie State College faculty member and inaugural Producer of NFL Films, as he introduces us to his specialty; digital film production, which he has used to capture, enhance, and herald our uniquely attractive region. Tuckett, who also founded the popular DOCUTAH independent film festival hosted each year in Southern Utah, is a significant force for good in the uptick of talent coming out of Utah.
