Brown Bag Lectures Continue in 2013
St. George, Utah—Each Friday, the Bureau of Land Management and its’ partners host the popular Brown Bag Lecture series. The lecture season which runs from October through April each year, will conclude for 2013 with a diverse mix of fascinating lectures throughout the month of April.
The lectures provide unique opportunities for members of the public to learn more about the benefits of the area’s natural resources and public lands. Speakers including geologists, range specialists, biologists, archaeologists, rangers and other specialists who will delve more deeply into subjects tied to the Arizona Strip and surrounding public lands. For those who want to learn more before venturing out or are otherwise unable to access some of these remote and rugged landscapes, the lectures are an excellent way to bring the resources and related issues to the community’s doorstep.
The noontime lecture series are hosted at the Interagency Information Center, located at 345 E. Riverside Drive in St. George, Utah. Programs begin at noon and last for one hour. Admission is free, but space is limited for this popular lecture series. Obtain tickets in advance from the Interagency Information Center to reserve a seat.

April 5: "Virtual Exploration of Your Public Lands” Join Rachel Tueller, Arizona Strip Public Affairs Officer and Iris Picat, St. George Field Office New Media Specialist, as they navigate through a virtual public lands tour through the agency’s many social media web sites. If you love the outdoors, you’ll love the many opportunities to interact with other outdoor enthusiasts via Facebook, YouTube, Tumblr, Twitter, Instagram, Flickr and more. These sites are today’s greatest buzz as they provide fabulous virtual portals to keep you connected with your favorite recreational areas, activities and projects through up-to-the-minute posts, photos and videos!
April 12: “The Shivwitz Band: The Significant 1890’s” Historian Leo Lyman will share his findings about the relocation of the Shivwitz Band of the Southern Paiute from the North Rim of the Grand Canyon to the current reservation west of Ivins, Utah. Lyman’s studies provide insights into the myriad and mixed motivations and dynamics of this transitional time period.
April 19: “Fire Forecast: 2013” Mark Rosenthal, BLM Arizona Strip Fire Management Officer will provide an overview of what may be in store for this region during the 2013 fire season. Rosenthal’s information will also include educational tips to help the public best prepare for the fire season. Rosenthal’s years of service gives us a peek into the action behind the scenes where wild land fire fighters combat some of the region’s toughest natural and man-made hazards.
April 26: “Red Cliffs Desert Reserve” Cornell Christensen, Outreach Coordinator for the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve provides a better look at the purpose of the Reserve as well as an introduction to some of the Reserve’s unique desert dwellers. Christensen will be joined by a select, live group of these critters, including several of the Reserve’s protected Desert Tortoise. For a head start on enjoying this presentation take a look at
