Smithsonian Butte Back Country Byway
Smithsonian Butte Back Country Byway travels for 9 miles between Rockville, Utah, on State Route 9 and Apple Valley, Utah, on State Route 59 in southwestern Utah. Smithsonian Butte was named by John Wesley Powell, a famous explorer.
As the route winds above the Valley of the Virgin River, you'll experience views of Zion Canyon, Canaan Mountain, the Vermillion Cliffs, and Zion National Park just four miles west. As you reach the highest points on the Byway, Zion's fiery landscaping, filled with buttes and temples, lays in panoramic glory at your feet.
