Areas of Critical Environmental Concern

Lower Virgin River

This 1,822 acre area is located along the Virgin River just north of the Utah/Arizona state line and about two miles southwest of the community of Bloomington in southwest St. George. It contains many archeological sites that can be affiliated to the prehistoric Ancestral Puebloans, the Southern Paiute, as well as essential riparian resources and associated habitat for the endangered woundfin minnow, the endangered Virgin River chub, and migratory and non-game birds. All of these resources are at risk from increasing vandalism, off-road motorized travel, increasing recreation use, urban development, and other forms of human encroachment.
