Areas of Critical Environmental Concern

Canaan Mountain ACEC

Canaan Mountain ACECThis 31,355 acre area is located about sixteen miles southeast of the city of Hurricane, Utah, and one mile north of the Utah/Arizona state line. It contains some of the most rugged topography and spectacular scenic values in southwest Utah outside of Zion National Park. Historic structures are found in the higher elevations and numerous archeological sites are found along the base of many of the distinctive red cliffs. It is at risk from unauthorized vehicle travel inside of closed areas, extensive vandalism, theft of signs and historic resources, and encroachment and trespass from the neighboring communities.
