Filming at Bonneville Salt Flats Filming at White Rocks

BLM Salt Lake Field Office public land has been the backdrop for numerous feature films, documentaries, TV show episodes, video and still photo ads.  Past productions include World's Fastest Indian, Pirates of the Caribbean 3, Touched by An Angel, The Core, Independence Day, Con Air, Mulholland Falls, Buffalo Dreams, Boys of Bonneville and countless commercials.

Most notably, the Bonneville Salt Flats have become internationally renowned as a unique backdrop for filming major motion pictures, fashion layouts, and automobile commercials.  The filming season goes from approximately June to October when the salt flats are normally dry.  The salt flats are flooded with water, to some degree, from November to May. Filming at Bonneville is permissible year-round provided crews are prepared to handle the challenging conditions. Production outfits should contact the Salt Lake Field Office with plenty of lead time to schedule their shoot around the many other recreational events that occur at the salt flats each year.

Other possible locations for filming in the Salt Lake Field Office include Horseshoe Knolls, Lone Rock, White Rocks, Five Mile Pass, Pony Express Trail, Simpson Springs, Silver Island Mountains, Knolls Off-Road Vehicle Area, Stansbury Island, Skull Valley, and Rush Valley.

For more information on locations and permitting, contact the Salt Lake Field Office at 801-977-4300.
