THE LAKETOWN PROJECT
RICH COUNTY, UTAH

The Laketown Project is a treatment area located on BLM lands in Rich County, Utah.  During the summer handcrews with chainsaws increased the spacing through stands of dense Utah juniper trees on 75 acres of BLM land.  Slash from the project work was piled on the area.

This winter the Salt Lake Field Office, BLM plans to burn those piles.  The goal of the project is to reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire to the community of Laketown by breaking up the continuity of the juniper woodland.

The Salt Lake Field Office has performed similar treatments throughout the last six years.  Observations from prior treatments have exhibited success improving wildlife habitat through an increase in herbaceous vegetation, formerly choked out by the dense juniper.

The BLM has conducted pre-treatment data collection which shows the current density of juniper as 150 trees per acre; a 16.4% canopy cover with spacing at 18 feet.  After completion of the project, the vegetative components of the treated area will be measured to determine the success of the project.  This will be completed at two and five years post treatment, with a goal of every five years following implementation.
