Physical Training

     Wildland firefighting can be a physically demanding job. Temperatures during the work period can range from the low 30’s to above 110°. The topography can go from an asphalt interstate to a rocky 100% slope and work shifts can last in excess of 16 hours. It is because of this that applicants must pass the Work Capacity Test as a condition of hire.

      The pack test must be completed on the first day of work, and if the test is failed, the applicant will not be offered a position on the crew. It consists of hiking with a 45 lb. pack over level ground in 45 minutes or less. During the first two weeks of training the IHC Physical Fitness Standards, along with PT hikes, will be used to help determine the crew’s fitness level.

     Bonneville IHC places a strong emphasis on physical conditioning. Personal safety depends upon all crew members possessing the ability to traverse steep rugged terrain under extreme conditions. The IHC Physical Fitness Standards are listed below. Keep in mind that most of the crewmembers far exceed these standards.

     It is important for applicants to understand that a high level of physical fitness is required before reporting to work. Our PT program is intended to enhance and maintain crewmembers physical fitness, not get them into shape. Starting the season in top physical condition will make the job less stressful and more enjoyable for all involved. All individuals desiring a position on the Bonneville IHC should take part in a training program during the fall, winter, and spring that is a combination of cardio, endurance lifting, and proper stretching. This is done in order to build a cohesive, safe, and effective team.
