Wilderness Study Areas (WSA) were established by the BLM under the authority of the Federal Land Policy and Management Act (FLPMA) of 1976 as areas of public land having wilderness characteristics as described under the Wilderness Act of 1964. The BLM is charged with managing these public lands in a manner that does not impair their suitability for future preservation as wilderness. The status of a WSA remains unchanged until Congress passes legislation that either officially designates the area as wilderness or releases it from further wilderness consideration.
The BLM Salt Lake Field Office currently has two WSAs under its jurisdiction. For more information, click on the links in the upper right of this page.
The BLM offers a reward of up to $250 for information leading to the arrest or conviction of any person(s) violating off-road vehicle use regulations or damaging BLM signs within the Salt Lake Field Office. Call 801-977-4300 to report violations.
