Swing Arm City
Most OHV users prefer to camp in the play area at Swing Arm City and this area will continue to be available for camping. Most campers pull into the small alcoves along the main ridges to avoid the wind.
The Rock Pile
Visitors may camp along Factory Bench at the ‘Rock Pile,’ a small rock formation located about 6 miles north of the Factory Bench/ Highway 24 junction
Coal Mine Wash
Campers may camp along the Coal Mine Wash Road. However, OHV users will not be permitted to ride OHVs in the surrounding hills.
The Mix Pad
Visitors may camp at ‘The Mix Pad’ located just west of Cainvelle Mesa Road on the Road which leads into the Red Desert. This area gets the most use during Easter weekend.
Notom Road Area
Traditional campsites are located at the Cottonwood Wash and Notom Road Intersection where there are a few large cottonwood trees. Other campsites are located on both sides of the Notom Road where Pleasant Creek crosses it. Another site is located on the Road to Bloody Hands Gap about a mile east of its junction with Notom Road (just past a small corral).
The BLM recognizes the recreational values of Factory Butte and plans to increase its amenities to enhance visitors’ experience. These amenities may include interpretive kiosks, toilet facilities and observation areas. A staging area is already planned, and BLM will seek user’s input in determining other future improvements.
A Few Reminders to Campers in the Factory Butte Area:
- Take all your garbage with you and practice Leave no Trace principles
- There is a 14 day camping limit in the Factory Butte Area
Please use previously disturbed areas to prevent further damage to vegetation.
