HOW TO OBTAIN A SAN JUAN RIVER PERMIT
Changes have been made to permit fees and the permit application process for 2014. Please read the following permit instructions carefully.
The following information applies to non-commercial boating permits only.
HIGH-USE SEASON: Trips launching April 1st through October 31st
Launch reservations are initially issued through a permit lottery. Remaining available launch dates and launch cancellations are then issued through advance telephone reservations.
Update: The San Juan River lottery application period is closed for 2014. See instructions below.
MODERATE-USE SEASON: Trips launching March 1st – March 31st
Advance Phone Reservations: Launch reservations may be reserved in advance by calling the river office, beginning December 2nd. The application process is completed over the phone and a $6 non-refundable application fee must be paid immediately, upon reserving a trip, with a credit/debit card over the phone. A calendar of available launches is updated daily on the BLM San Juan River Permits page.
LOW-USE SEASON: Trips launching November 1st – February 28th
Advance Phone Reservations: Launch reservations may be reserved in advance by calling the river office, beginning December 2nd. The application process is completed over the phone and a $6 application fee must be paid immediately upon reserving a trip with a credit/debit card over the phone. A per person per trip fee is not charged for trips launching during the low-use season.
RESERVATION CONFIRMATION AND FEE PAYMENT
To confirm your launch reservation and obtain a permit, your entire fee payment must be received at least 30 days prior to the launch date (or upon reserving a trip, if you are reserving a trip less than 30 days prior to the launch). If a launch reservation is not confirmed 30 days prior to the launch date, it will be cancelled and immediately be made available to other boaters.
Payment may be made by calling the river office and paying with a credit/debit card over the phone or by sending a personal check, cashier’s check, or money order to the Monticello Field Office.
Make checks and money orders payable to “Dept. of Interior – BLM”. You will receive your permit shortly after payment is received. Please include your permit number on the check, and make note if you are paying for a smaller group size than indicated on your reservation. To add additional people to your reservation, you must call the river office to check for availability and receive authorization before sending payment.
The following per person per trip fee schedule is currently in effect for the San Juan River:
A per person per trip fee is not charged for the Montezuma Creek to Sand Island section. However, a $6 application fee and permit are required.
PERMIT CHANGES, CANCELLATIONS, AND TRANSFERS
Changes: Changes to permits must be made in advance by calling the San Juan River Office. Only the permit holder may request changes or request the addition of persons to the permit. No more than two changes may be made to a permit.
Cancellation and refund policy: If you have already paid for your launch reservation and cancel your permit at least 30 days prior to the launch date, we will authorize a credit equal to the amount of the permit fee that may be applied to a launch later in the same calendar year on the San Juan River. You must ask for a credit at the time you cancel. A credit is not issued for trips cancelled less than 30 days before the launch. No refunds are issued for cancelled permits under any circumstances, including undesirable river flow levels or poor weather conditions. Reservations and permits may be cancelled by calling the river office or by sending an e-mail to BLM_UT_SanJuan_Permits@blm.gov. Include your permit number and launch date when cancelling via e-mail.
Transfers: Launch reservations are not transferable. A paid permit is not transferable without prior approval of the issuing office. Do not show up at the ramp with a permit in someone else’s name. The permittee must submit a written request to transfer the permit to another member of their party. Transfers are approved on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the issuing office.
