Moon House Day Use Permits

Moon House RuinA day use permit is required year-round for visiting Moon House ruin and the McLoyd Canyon-Moon House Recreation Management Zone (RMZ).  Cedar Mesa day use and annual permits do not apply.

High Use and Low Use Seasons

Entry into the Moon House RMZ requires a special permit available only at the Kane Gulch Ranger Station, during the high-use seasons, spring (March 1st - June 15th) and summer September 1st - October 31st).  Permits are limited and subject to availability.  Permits may be reserved in advance by calling the Cedar Mesa Permit Office or obtained in person at the Kane Gulch Ranger Station on the day of your trip.  All permits, including those reserved in advance, must be picked up in person at the Kane Gulch Ranger Station on the day of your trip, between 8:00 AM and noon.  During the low use seasons, winter (November 1st - February 28th) and summer (June 16th - August 31st), self-pay envelopes and registration forms are available at the trailheads.

 

Use Limits

Access to Moon House ruin and the McLoyd Canyon-Moon House RMZ is limited to 20 people per day.  12 of the 20 visitor spaces are available for advance reservation, while the remaining 8 spaces are available by walk-in only at the Kane Gulch Ranger Station, on the morning of your trip.

Advance Reservations

Advance reservations for Moon House day use permits are available 3 months prior to your trip date and no later than 2 days before your trip date.  They may be obtained by calling the Cedar Mesa Permit Office at (435) 587-1510, between 8:00 AM and noon (MDT) Monday through Friday.

  • Advance reservations are issued on a first come first served basis.
  • Group size is limited to 12 people.
  • Commercial groups, organized groups (school, church, scout group, club, etc.), and groups of 8 or more people must obtain an advance reservation for a permit.
  • All advance reservation permits must be picked up at the Kane Gulch Ranger Station, between 8:00 AM and noon (MDT) on the date of your trip.
  • Payment may be made with credit card, check, or cash.
  • Permit fees are $2.00 per person.

Walk-In Permits

Walk-in permits for Moon House day use permits are available daily, and must be obtained at the Kane Gulch Ranger Station during the high use seasons (March 1st - June 15th and September 1st - October 31st).  During the low use seasons (November 1st - February 28th and June 16th - August 31st), self-pay envelopes and registration forms are available at the trailheads.

  • Walk-in permits for Moon House day use permits are only issued on the morning of the trip, between 8:00 AM and noon (MDT).  No walk-in permits will be issued in advance of the trip date.
  • Payment may be made with credit card, check, or cash.
  • Permit fees are $2.00 per person.
